England’s NHS regulator has warned that failings in maternity care, previously exposed in high-profile investigations at hospitals in Shrewsbury, Telford, and East Kent, are becoming increasingly common across the country. A recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) review of 131 maternity units highlighted serious issues, including staffing shortages, inadequate facilities, and poor safety management, putting mothers and babies at significant risk.
The CQC report, which focused on units not inspected since March 2021, revealed troubling conditions such as understaffed wards, malfunctioning equipment, and delays in emergency procedures. Shockingly, almost half of the units were rated as inadequate or requiring improvement, with a staggering 65% deemed unsafe. The review also uncovered alarming accounts of women being left without pain relief, cramped and unsanitary wards, and discriminatory treatment towards ethnic minorities.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the findings as a “national shame,” emphasising that women should not have to fear childbirth. The CQC is calling for urgent investment in buildings and equipment and urging NHS England to improve the monitoring of safety incidents to prevent the normalisation of preventable harm.
