The Department for Transport has released the Reported Road Casualties Great Britain Annual Report 2024, revealing a slight decline in road fatalities and serious injuries compared with 2023.
In 2024:
- 1,602 people were killed, down 1% from 2023
- 29,467 were killed or seriously injured (KSI), also down 1%
- 128,272 total casualties were recorded across all severities, a 4% decrease
Vehicle travel has now returned to pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated 340 billion miles travelled in 2024. When adjusted for distance travelled, there were 4.7 road fatalities per billion miles, a 3% reduction from the previous year.
Car occupants made up the largest share of fatalities, with 692 deaths, while motorcyclists continued to have the highest casualty rates per mile travelled. Notably, 76% of fatalities and 61% of all casualties were male.
Despite the slight decline, these figures show that serious road collisions remain a persistent issue, with thousands of people and families affected every year.
