Helen Davey, a mother of two, was tragically suffocated when the gas-lift mechanism of her ottoman bed failed, causing the mattress platform to collapse and trap her neck, leading to her death. An inquest revealed that one of the gas pistons, designed to lift the mattress, was defective.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers of faulty furniture mechanisms. The coroner overseeing the case raised concerns with the Office for Product Standards, warning that unless action is taken, more lives could be at risk. With many households owning Ottoman beds, regular checks for defects are essential to prevent similar tragedies.
Under the Consumer Protection Act 2015, the liability for a faulty product that causes death or injury can lie with the retailer who sold the item.
