Child Maintenance

The financial obligations towards children do not end when your relationship breaks down. The Child Support Agency (CSA) can assist in assessing the amount of maintenance paid and they can also collect payments on your behalf. There are a number of factors which the CSA take into consideration in calculating maintenance.

In simple terms this is based on the:

  • Net income of the non-resident parent
  • Number of children for whom maintenance is to be paid

Maintenance is payable for children who are under the age of 16 or between 16 and 19 and in full time education (but not above A levels or equivalent).

If you are having difficulty in getting maintenance from the non-resident parent or if you are unhappy with the decision made by the CSA contact Vina Lad, head of SC Law's family department for further information and advice.
