Pressure sores

It is traumatic enough being in hospital for treatment, but it is even more distressing if you or a relative then develops pressure sores. Pressure sores are caused by failure to turn a patient on a regular basis, usually every 2 hours, to relieve pressure on certain parts of the body. If bedsores develop and are left untreated, the sores can become serious or infected and may lead to the need for plastic surgery and in some cases the pressure sores can even result in death. If the pressure sores were caused by inadequate hospital or nursing care that could have been prevented, you may be entitled to compensation.

SC Law has a panel of specialist medical and other experts to prepare the reports needed to support our clients' claims where a patient has developed pressure sores whilst in hospital or in a nursing home. When you've suffered due to the negligence of a hospital or where a relative has died as a result of the pressure sores, our specialist clinical negligence solicitors understand that pursuing a claim at an already stressful time is another problem to cope with.

Causes of Pressure Sores

Although pressure sores are preventable they can occur when patients, usually those who are elderly or unable to move, are not turned enough or given special mattresses, which causes the skin to break down and leaves open wounds. If the sores are not treated appropriately, the resulting wounds can become infected, turn black or cause holes to develop. Even where preventative measures are taken, sores can still develop quickly, particularly in patients who have little or no mobility. It is therefore vital that correct treatment is given to minimise the chances of the bed sores developing further.

At SC Law, our team of clinical negligence lawyers is experienced in pursuing claims where a patient has developed pressure sores as a result of inadequate hospital or nursing care. We have secured very substantial compensation awards for clients, particularly where the pressure sores have resulted in removal of a limb and in worse cases, caused death.
